Jimmy Upstairs has a long Chicago Blues musical history. Jimmy toured extensively with Willie Big Eyes Smith. He toured with Nate Turner. He played in Tail Dragger’s band for 30 years. He cut his teeth with the who’s who in Chicago Blues at the old Checkerboard Lounge. In more recent times he has become a regular in Billy Flynn’s band. He has expanded his musical offerings into Jazz & Classic Lounge.
Low-reen picked up guitar, inspired by her time hanging out at the end times of the Maxwell St Market and her friendship with Honeyboy Edwards. Low-reen formed her own band in 2010, Low-reen & Maxwell St Market Blues, as well as Low-reen & the Lazy Dogs, and Low-reen & Harpdog’s Firehouse Blues. She spent a great deal of time with some of the same people that were influencing Jimmy. Considering their similar musical interests, it was really just a matter of time that Jimmy & Low-reen would cross paths & begin to play music together, and that happened around 2023.
Low-reen & Jimmy Upstairs began performing together in 2023, drawn together by an appreciation of Traditional Chicago Blues. First performing together in their band, in 2025 they added a Duo format for a special request show to include Jazz & Classic Lounge as well as Chicago Blues. It was a big hit and was booked as a monthly residency, which also led to other shows. The birth of the Lounge Act, with a wink aka Murph & the Magic Tones 🙂
